Harvey Milk may have his own Naval vessel soon

Posted on: April 23, 2012

We may soon have a naval vessel named after a LGBT leader if civil rights leaders and Congressman Bob Filner have their way.

The leader?  Harvey Milk.  It’s an idea that is starting to really take hold, partially because Milk himself was a Navy veteran who served in the Korean War aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake.  Both of his parents also served, and he was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant, junior grade.

The letter writing campaign taskforce has urged top military officials to support the naming of a naval vessel in honor of Milk, and have received some support.  Secretary of Navy Ray Mabus and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta Filer have joined the cause.  If you would like to join the campaign send your own letter to The Honorable Ray Mabus, Secretary of the Navy, The Pentagon, Washington, D.C. 203501-001.
