Aging, LGBT and the White House

Posted on: April 27, 2012

There is one issue that gets very little press in the LGBT community: aging.   As the LGBT Aging Project puts it, “lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders are invisible to mainstream elder service providers and that older LGBTs are invisible within LGBT community as well.”

It’s a struggle for seniors of all orientations to stay free of isolation as they age, and it’s even more difficult for couples that may not be allowed to live together in assisted living, or who may not be recognized as partners when it comes time to make decisions.  Thus it is reassuring that the White House will present a conference on May 7th  in Miami entitled “The White House LGBT Conference on Aging.”

This conference should provide advocates, community leaders, and members of the public a chance to discuss housing, health, and the security needs of aging members of the LGBT community.
