AFER supports Nevada Equality Case

Posted on: April 28, 2012

The sponsor of the Perry v. Brown case that is currently challenging Proposition 8, the American Foundation for Equal Rights,  is throwing its support behind a recent lawsuit filed in Nevada. The case asserts that Nevada is violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the US Constitution by not allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry and consists of eight gay and lesbian couples.

Adam Umhoefer announced that AFER would contribute $25,000 to the Plaintiffs’ legal fund. Which is directly in keeping with their mission and vision, according to their board.

“Stripping away the right of adults… to marry the person they love is antithetical to freedom.” AFER Board Member Ken Mehlman wrote in an article.  “If we really believe (and we should) that every citizen is endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness, shouldn’t this include the right to marriage?”

“Every American deserves the same dignity and respect, the same freedom to love, to marry and to build a family, no matter which state they live in,” said Chad Griffin, AFER Board President. “I am proud that the historic victories in the Perry case helped make possible today’s lawsuit inNevada. Working together, we will soon realize this most American of dreams.”
