International Family Equality Day gives all families a chance

Posted on: May 2, 2012

As part of International Family Equality Day, LGBT parents and their families are gathering for a picnic at Lake Hollywood Park just below the infamous Hollywood sign.

This event is a world-wide one, as the name implies. In Switzerland families are taking lunch in Parc des Bastions, in Germany they’re visiting Stuttgart Zoo, in New York it’s Times Square.

The wonderful thing about this event is that it brings together kids with the same family background, allowing them to play and enjoy themselves without the perennial worry about explaining their situation.  It also helps to educate the public, teaching them that LGBT families aren’t something strange.

“I see this day as a chance for gay and lesbian moms and dads to stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters around the world.” says Rich Valenza, President of The Pop Luck Club. “In many parts of the world, gay parents and our children face extra challenges. By raising visibility, we hope to educate our neighbors and the world that our families and children are very much like theirs.”
