Lokoing closer at Mitt Romney’s record

Posted on: May 14, 2012

Mitt Romney’s history with LGBT groups isn’t looking so hot.  Particularly when we examine his relationship with the Governor’s Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth.

Created by Romney’s predecessor in response to the alarmingly high suicide rates among LGBT teens, the commission provided training and information for teachers and helped to fund Gay Straight Alliances throughout state high schools.

However, it existed at the Governor’s pleasure.  Problems started when Romney vetoed a $100,000 increase in the budget and only snowballed when the commission let a long-running LGBT youth pride parade use their name on materials.  Romney’s office saw pictures  online and were upset.  Romney threatened to dissolve the commission on the spot.

Looking back at the situation it’s a little hard to determine how much was personal between Romney and that particular commission and how much was Romney being uncomfortable with the idea of the commission and supporting it in the first place.

But either way you look at it, Romney’s true views on LGBT issues bear looking into.
