Kristen Bell Says No to the Knot

Posted on: November 8, 2012

At 32, Kristen Bell is expecting her first child. She and her fiancée Dax Shephard have been dating since 2007 and have been engaged since 2009. And even though they’re expecting, they’re not getting married—not yet. Why? They’re waiting until California passes legislation to legalize same-sex marriage.

Wow. Talk about standing up for what you believe in. It’s nice to know that the LGBT communities has such strong allies—those that would refuse their basic rights until they’re offered to all.

“We’re not punishing America by not getting married,” Shephard explained to CNN in August of this year. “We’re not going to have a party and invite our friends, half of whom can’t [get married]. We’re not going to ask them to come celebrate a right they don’t have.”

“Can you think about how rude that would feel,” asks Bell. “I don’t believe in standing in the way of love, and I want to stand up for that right. And that’s what it is. If someone wants to commit their life to another person, why would I not bolster that argument?”

In 2008, California passed Proposition 8, which denies the right of same-sex couples to marry. Hollingsworth v. Perry challenges that proposition and will be discussed on November 20th in the Supreme Court. The court is expected to either grant or deny review of the case.

If granted, they will consider whether it violates the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. If it denies review, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit decision that struck down the proposition will be made permanent and therefore overturn the proposition—effectively ending four years of marriage inequality in the state.
