One Equal World

Whoopi Goldberg Honored by HRC

Posted on: January 18, 2013

Whoopi Goldberg is the next celebrity who can add a Human Rights Campaign award to her resume. The HRC Greater New York Steering Committee announced recently that the actress and activist will receive the 2013 HRC Ally for Equality Award, an honor that will be celebrated at the annual Greater New York Gala dinner on February 2nd at the Waldorf Astoria.

The award is given to straight LGBT allies that believe in and fight for equality for all people, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. As a public figure, Whoopi Goldberg has been one of the most outspoken advocates for equality on all fronts, reportedly calling marriage-equality a “no-brainer.”

“We are proud to honor Whoopi Goldberg with the Ally for Equality Award for her commitment to the LGBT community through her public support of marriage equality, including taking part in our successful New Yorkers for Marriage Equality video campaign in 2011,” said Chad Griffin, president of HRC. “Whoopi is always willing to stand up for our community and is a longtime friend of HRC.”

Whoopi is among many friends in the celebrity world. Among those who have openly and strongly declared their support for the LGBT equality movement are names like Anne Hathaway, George Clooney, Pink, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, Clint Eastwood, Cyndi Lauper, Charles Barkley, Daniel Radcliffe, Julianne Moore, Steven Spielberg, Miley Cyrus, Sean Penn, and Natalie Portman—among others.

“I think it’s a very basic human rights issue,” said Julianne Moore. “Everybody has the right to marry the person they love and be represented as a couple and family… It’s something that people will look back on in years to come and say, ‘I can’t believe it took so long for us to recognize this.’ It’ll be like segregation and giving women the right to vote.”
