Michelle Shocked Gains Ire of LGBT-verse

Posted on: March 26, 2013

Born-again Christian singer Michelle Shocked gained the ire of people everywhere after her anti-gay breakdown at a recent concert. Shocked was performing at Yoshi’s in San Francisco on Sunday, March 17th, when she went on the tirade that has so far caused nine venues to cancel her future performances.

She told the audience that she feared same-sex marriage and believed in the rhetoric of Westboro Baptist Church.

“When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization, and Jesus will come back,” Shocked said to the crowd, later adding “You can go on Twitter and say, ‘Michelle Shocked says God hates f–s.’”

And that’s just what they did, as soon as the venue’s staff put an abrupt end to the performance by turning off the stage lights and sound. Audience members were shocked by the tirade, and Shocked had no shortage of disdainful messages to sift through or ignore at the end of the night.

A petition has since gone up on Change.org that is urging over a dozen of Shocked’s future venues to cancel her shows there. Over 2,500 people had signed the petition at the time this article was written.

The petition, put up by LGBT activist John Becker, reads:

“Freedom of speech and artistic expression are critically important, but this isn’t free speech. This is hate speech. And in a world where LGBT people are bullied from the pulpit, on the playground, and at the polls, anti-gay hate speech can have serious consequences including legitimatizing bullying and hate crimes, and increasing victims’ risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide.”
