On May 12, a transgender woman was brutally murdered.  The 32-year-old’s name was Laura Aguilar.  She was one of the first people to obtain a gender identification change under Argentina’s Gender Identity Law.  She was killed in the city of Rio Grande.

Some might think this was an LBGT hate crime. Aguilar was also an African-American woman, so others might assume it was a racial hate crime.  On both counts they would be wrong.

Augilar went to visit her former partner, 55-year-old Carlos Humberto Traberg.  Her purpose?  The two had broken up, and she wanted to try to win him back.  Traberg lived with and cared for his mother.  Yet, according to a spokesperson, the two got into an argument and Aguilar ended up dead, stabbed to death with a kitchen knife.

The murder was a domestic dispute that had nothing to do with her identification as a transgender woman.

The Gender Identification Law passed by the Argentinian Senate, with a vote of 55-0, allowed people to change their names and sexes on official documents without first getting approval from a doctor or judge.   A small group of transsexuals lined up to register immediately after the vote in downtown Buenos Aires. Aguilar was one of the first to receive a gender identification change.

However, Aguilar’s life was still full of complications. She had been having difficulty obtaining access to the specialized medical care mandated by the law, and she had been working with local activists to get help.  Further, Governor Fabiana Rios, of Tierra del Fuego, had been attempting to help her.

Aguilar will be missed and remembered for her courageous efforts.

This is very sad. They had been in a relationship and this woman was his family, even if they had broken up and he kills her like this? The true picture of an abuser. That’s why we have to be so very, very, careful about who we choose for a mate. Anyone with any type of abusive qualities…

May she rest in Peace.
