Betty Crocker teamed up with same-sex couples to make their special day a little sweeter.

August 1st marked a very important day for many same-sex couples in Minnesota – it’s the day they finally were able to legally wed. Over the last few months, the gay rights movement has gained serious momentum, with many states legalizing same-sex unions and DOMA being deemed unconstitutional. Though there is much work that needs to be done to achieve equal rights for everyone in our country, right now at least, is a time for many to celebrate.

What better way to celebrate at your wedding reception than with a first bite of delicious cake as newlyweds? Betty Crocker, the famous baking company owned by General Mills, wanted to help make this happen, and generously donated cakes to many couples for their August 1st nuptials. As the first couples to wed in Minnesota prepared for their ceremonies, Betty Crocker invited them to come to the General Mills headquarters for cake tastings, in sweet preparation for their wedding receptions.

These efforts made by the iconic company are part of their “The Families Project,” which seeks to raise awareness about families of all kinds. The Betty Crocker Company was excited to celebrate with these couples as they made history in Minnesota by being the first same-sex partners to wed. According to “The Families Project:”

Families are changing a lot. But they’ve still got one thing in common – the love that makes a home. At Betty Crocker, we believe that a family is a family, no matter how it’s arranged.

We’re on a mission to understand what it means to be a family – so we can share the strengths that make every family part of a home.”

The program’s work to increase awareness about the diversity within American families is remarkable, especially because it is backed by such an iconic brand. Betty Crocker is not only bringing joy to couples on their wedding day by providing cakes; the company is also cooking up a recipe for social change.
