In one fell tweet Raven Symonè has stirred up enormous amounts of speculation after publicly expressing her gratitude to the United States Supreme Court for striking down DOMA.

The actress, known for her roles on “The Cosby Show” and Disney Channel sitcom “That’s So Raven,” has formerly been very private about her personal life, dodging rumors about her sexual orientation for years. She quickly got the Internet world buzzing after posting on her Twitter account on August 2nd, saying, “I can finally get married! Yay government! So proud of you.”

The brief statement suggests her appreciation for progress being made in the fight for gay rights; the actress has said in interviews that she has no intention of marrying anyone anytime soon, but is glad that the option is now more readily available to her. Celebrity coming-outs have long been met with varying public opinions. For some, coming out has been met with relief, support, and pride, but others still fear that their careers will be adversely affected by an announcement of their sexual orientation.

For non-celebrities, being openly gay doesn’t have the same implications because it’s really no one’s business but their own. However, celebrities face criticism based on every facet of their day-to-day lives, which means that being gay or lesbian could directly impact their fans’ perception of them. Happily, more and more celebrities are coming out, so perhaps Raven Symonè simply feels like she’s in a safer space to be true to herself. The actress is joining the ranks of other newly “out” celebrities like Anderson Cooper, Frank Ocean, and Amber Heard. Acclaimed actress Jodie Foster officially came out after years of media speculation at the 2013 Golden Globe awards when she said, “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the Stone Age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends, and family, coworkers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her,” speaking to the complicated nature of coming out for celebrities.

With celebrities feeling more comfortable about publicly coming out, stars like Raven Symonè can exist as brave role models for those who haven’t yet.
