A UKIP Councillor, David Silvester of Oxfordshire was suspended this week after blaming recent heavy floods in Britain on the legalization of gay marriage, which passed last year. Same sex marriages are planned to begin in force on March 29th, 2014. In legalizing gay marriage, Silvester says the British government and Prime Minister Cameron have acted “arrogantly against the Gospel.”

The decision to legalize gay marriage has caused the nation to be “beset by serious storms and floods,” he continued, saying, “no man or men, however powerful, can mess with Almighty God with impunity and get away with it.”

“The scriptures make it abundantly clear that a Christian nation that abandons its faith and acts contrary to the Gospel… will be beset by natural disasters, such as storms, disease, pestilence and war,” he added, claiming that he warned the Prime Minister that “disasters would accompany the passage of his same sex marriage bill.” These comments were part of a commentary sent to the Henley Standard by Silvester recently.

Councillor Silvester departed from the Conservative Party last year after the passage of the bill, protesting its enactment. Now, he says, that the recent disasters across the nation can be blamed on the government’s arrogance and refusal to heed the Gospel.

“Now, even as Cameron sheds crocodile tears on behalf of destitute flooded homeowners, playing at advocate against the very local councils he has made cash-strapped, it is his fault that large swathes of the nation have been afflicted by storms and floods.”

While UKIP originally stated that Henley had the right to his own opinion regarding the matter, Silvester has since been suspended from the party. The latter happened after he refused to conduct further interviews on his statements.

Silvester was also quoted by BBC Radio as saying that being gay was a curable “spiritual disease.” In the past, he has also compared the passage of abortion laws to the Holocaust. Perhaps surprisingly, Silvester says he has no hatred or fear of gay people.

“I don’t have a problem with gay people,” he said. I believe as a Christian I should love gay people and indeed, I do.”

“My prayer for them is they will be healed. It is nonsense to say it is homophobic. If you love a person enough to want them to be healed and to have a proper family, that is hardly homophobic. It is a spiritual disease… it’s not what I say, it’s what the Bible says.”

What do you think? Is Silvester just another crazy homophobe, or is he entitled to his belief system?
