Annise Parker and Kathy Hubbard Said Their Vows Last Month

Posted on: February 4, 2014

Houston, Texas, Mayor Annise Parker wed her partner Kathy Hubbard last month in Palm Springs, California. Parker is the first openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city—in Texas to boot—and she and Hubbard have been together for more than twenty years.

“I am privileged to now be the wife of the woman I have loved for more than 2 decades,” Parker tweeted on January 16th. “I couldn’t be happier. We said our vows today. –A.”

The ceremony was an intimate gathering of the couple’s closest friends and family and was held at sunset at a private Palm Springs home.

“This is a very happy day for us,” Parker said in a statement. “We have had to wait a very long time to formalize our commitment to each other. Kathy has been by my side for more than two decades, helping to raise a family, nurture my political career and all of the other ups and downs and life events that come with a committed relationship.”

Originally, Parker had said she wouldn’t marry until Texas legalized same-sex marriage. However, when the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act and California’s Proposition 8 last year, she decided it was time to take her vows.

Many straight celebrities have taken a similar stance when approaching marriage—vowing not to get married until everyone has that same right.

“We both feel that in our engagement, we have a union that’s really special and can’t be broken. It’s a sacred bond,” Jason Mraz said of his engagement to Tristan Prettyman. “We can’t get married until [gay] marriage is legal and equal… I think giving people the right to marry will be a huge movement in civil rights.”

Other celebrities that have promised not to wed until everyone has the legal right include Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard, and Lena Dunham and Jack Antonoff.
