Jennifer Lopez, recognized worldwide for her singing, acting and most recently, her judging on American Idol, will be receiving GLAAD’s top honor at the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards on April 12th.

The award is given to those artists who have increased visibility, understanding and acceptance of the LGBT community through their work. She will be joining such global stars such as Cher, Antonio Banderes and Whoopie Goldberg, all previous winners of the award. Lopez is receiving the award for her role in the production of the new ABC Family’s show, The Fosters.

The show, about a lesbian couple raising a family of adopted, biological and foster children, is inspired by the actress’ late gay aunt.

Most recently, Lopez was on the Ellen Degeneres show to speak of her new, innovative show:

‘I thought about her and she had passed away already, and I thought this would be a great thing for me to do in her memory. She did have a tough time growing up and being gay. I felt like she would be so proud of me if I did this.’

GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis has said that Lopez is a powerful ally, and inspires support in the LGBT community with her work on The Fosters as well as consistently speaking out to youth.

‘Family is about love, and that’s the message Jennifer has shared with millions through her groundbreaking work on the Fosters.’

J. Lo will receive her award next month in Los Angeles.
